Different languages have different characteristics when translated into English. For instance, including “the”, the definite article, before all nouns as in the Romance languages is not acceptable in English. Estelle has experience working with students from many different countries whose mother tongue is not English. The following is an example of actual written work for an essay in English literature. It is clear that it had not even been spell-checked.
A. is the original material:
The imagery used here by K throughout t his poem, shows his appreciation, for the beauty of what is around him, from the birds singing too the rain falling two the branches of the tree falling on his shouldres.
B. is the corrected material following proofreading:
The imagery used here by K throughout this poem, shows his appreciation for the beauty of what is around him, from the birds singing, to the rain falling, to the branches of the tree falling on his shoulders.
C. Is the corrected material following discussion with the student and editing. It is important in academic work to preserve the style and language of the student author:
The imagery used by K in this poem shows his appreciation for the beauty around him ... the birds singing, the rain falling, the tree's branches falling on his shoulders.
As well as presenting a correct and concise version of the original, this has reduced the word count by almost a quarter, 9 words. This ability to condense is important where there is a limited word count.
